Probing Electrochemical Interfaces with X-ray Standing Waves

چکیده

The utility of the X-ray standing wave technique for the study of electrochemical interfaces is demonstrated. A platinum/carbon LSM (layered synthetic microstructure) with a d spacing of 56 A and with platinum as the outermost layer was used as a substrate. A layer of iodide was adsorbed, followed by the electrodeposition of a layer of copper. Simultaneously monitoring of the reflectivity as well as the fluorescence intensity arising from the iodide and copper layers showed that the copper layer is deposited on top of the platinum, consistent with previously reported LEED studies of Hubbard and co-workeis.

Future directions in standing-wave photoemission

Over the past decade, standing-wave photoemission (SW-XPS) has evolved into a powerful and versatile non-destructive technique for probing element-specific electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of buried layers and interfaces with sub-nanometer depth resolution. In this article, I will discuss several promising future directions in this emergent field stemming from experimental and th...

Probing the polarity of ferroelectric thin films with x-ray standing waves

An x-ray-diffraction method that directly senses the phase of the structure factor is demonstrated and used for determining the local polarity of thin ferroelectric films. This method is based on the excitation of an x-ray standing-wave field inside the film as a result of the interference between the strong incident x-ray wave and the weak kinematically Bragg-diffracted x-ray wave from the fil...

Scattering: X-Ray Standing Wave Techniques

Introduction The X-ray standing wave (XSW) technique provides an element-specific structural probe by using x-ray reflectivity to generate a " two-beam " interference field that in turn induces a spatial dependence to the x-ray spectroscopic yields from atoms within the field. The XSW technique is primarily used for resolving the atomic-scale structure at surfaces, interfaces, and thin films wi...

X-ray fluorescence induced by standing waves in the grazing-incidence and grazing-exit modes: study of the Mg-Co-Zr system.

The characterization of Mg-Co-Zr tri-layer stacks using X-ray fluorescence induced by X-ray standing waves, in both the grazing-incidence (GI) and the grazing-exit (GE) modes, is presented. The introduction of a slit in the direction of the detector improves the angular resolution by a factor of two and significantly improves the sensitivity of the technique for the chemical characterization of...
